The National Inspection Council for Electrical Installation Contracting is the industry's independent, non profit-making, voluntary regulatory body covering the whole of the United Kingdom. The NICEIC's sole purpose is to protect consumers from unsafe and unsound electrical work. We are not a trade association and do not represent the interests of electrical contractors.
Set up almost 50 years ago, the NICEIC maintains a Roll of Approved Contractors that are assessed every year to check that their work meets the national safety standard BS 7671 (the IEE Wiring Regulations) and other relevant technical standards.
We employ more than 60 Area Engineers, who make annual visits to Approved Contractors to assess their technical capability and inspect samples of their electrical work.
We have a head office staff of more than 80 including 22 electrical engineers, and we operate a Technical Helpline where contractors and specifiers can obtain practical advice and guidance - telephone: 0870 0130431 (for Approved Contractors) or 0870 0130391 (for specifiers and others).
The NICEIC has wide support from the electrical industry, professional bodies and consumer groups. The National Inspection Council consists of representatives from 75 bodies including Public Electricity Distributors, the Institution of Electrical Engineers, the Institution of Incorporated Engineers, the Consumers' Association, the Electrical Contractors' Association, trade unions and many other notable organisations having an interest in electrical safety.
